As parents we are always seeking opportunities that allow our children to have a good time and in the process, develop their confidence and foster new skills. On Bowen we are lucky to have a sailing program that provides all this and more. Children as young as six and up into their teens who are new to sailing will all have an opportunity to enjoy time on the water this summer.
Under the supervision of qualified coaches, kids can learn how to sail, enjoy time with friends, get great exercise and in the process gain confidence in themselves and become competent mariners.
As they progress through the various levels of instruction, sailing students will learn about: safety on and around the water; wind, weather and tides; basic care and maintenance of a sailboat; how to handle water emergencies; knot tying; nautical terms; but most of all they will have fun.
This year Bowen was fortunate to be selected to host the Optimist Sailing Course. Through Optimist BC children as young as six can begin to sail in a safe, well-supervised environment. Although this course can accommodate these young kids, children of all ages can join and benefit from this type of sailing.
We will continue to provide instruction for Whitesails I/II/III and Bronze IV/V, and will continue to support children as they move up through their sailing training. New this year is a fun week of sailing for all ages that have achieved a level of Whitesails III and beyond. It is a great opportunity for people of all ages to use their sailing skills and to just get some time in on the water.
