Sailing Instructions

Rules: The series will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing with CYA Prescriptions.

Eligibility: Series is open to all sailboats possessing a PHRF of BC rating, and meeting Canadian Coast Guard

standards for safety equipment. All boats must be covered by Third Party Liability insurance in the amount of $100,000.

Courses: One of two courses will be sailed, with all turning marks left to Port in all cases:

• North course: Flagged buoy in Cates Bay near the North end of Bowen Island, Bird Islets,

Finish Line. Signaled by N placard on Race Committee boat.

• South course: Passage Island, Bird Islets, Finish Line. Signaled by S placard on Race

Committee boat.

Start: Start time is 10:30am. The start line shall be between a red flag off the point of Miller’s Landing and a

committee boat which will hold station on the seaward side of the point of Miller’s Landing.

Start Sequence:

We will be using the 5 minute start sequence as described in Rule 26:

5 minutes prior to the start: Blue Triangle Class flag, one horn (warning signal)

4 minutes prior to the start: Blue Square Preparatory flag, one horn (preparatory signal)

1 minute prior to the start: Blue Square Preparatory flag removed, one long horn

Start: Blue Triangle Class flag removed, one horn

Finish: The finish line shall be between the red flag and the chimney of the red house situated on the point of Miller’s Landing.

Postponement: The Race Committee may postpone the start of a race by displaying the Answering Pennant (red and white vertical stripes) and sounding two horns. When the Answering Pennant is removed, accompanied by one horn, the warning signal will be given in one minute.

Recalls: Individual recalls will be signaled by the Race Committee displaying code flag X (blue cross on white background). The Race Committee may hail premature starters by voice, but it is the skipper’s

responsibility to return to the pre-start side of the starting line and re-start if their boat was on the course side of the start line prematurely, whether hailed by the Race Committee or not.

Time limit: No finish times will be recorded after 14:30 hours.

Scoring: Times will be calculated using the PHRF of BC time on time formula. The Low Point scoring

system as described in Appendix A of The Racing Rules of Sailing will be used for each race. There are four races scheduled; all races will count, and a minimum of one race shall constitute a series if not all can be completed.

Boats that came to the starting area but failed to finish before the time limit shall be scored 'DNF’ and awarded the points for one more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. Boats that did not come to the starting area shall be scored ‘DNC’ and awarded the points for one more than the number of boats entered in the series. Ties will be broken according to Appendix A 2.3 of The Racing Rules of Sailing.

Registration: Competing skippers must complete and sign an Entry Form including waiver of liability, and submit a registration fee of $20.00 for the series (free to BIYC members) prior to starting the first race in which they compete. The Race Committee will accept registrations up until 1000 hours on the day of a race.
