The Courses
Beginners:
White Sails I, II, and III
Lessons begin with the basics and students ten years or older with
little or no experience will learn new skills in a fun, safe
environment. They learn all the parts of the boat, how to rig and
de-rig it, tie knots and understand sailing terminology. Students work
all points of the sail and practice basic safety procedures and how to
right an overturned boat. Two students per boat make an excellent
choice for friends to share an activity. Students are required to
purchase the Basic Skills handbook unless they already have one.
Intermediate/Advanced: Bronze IV & V
For those who have achieved White Sails III and want to improve their
ability, the emphasis here is on advanced theory, sail trim, and
seamanship in heavier conditions. Skills include sailing without a
rudder, sailing backwards, using trapeze and spinnaker, gibing and boat
control. The Advanced Skills handbook is required. One can be purchased
for $25 if the student does not already own one.
Racing
This course is normally available to students who have graduated from
Bronze V and wish to explore racing. This is a three-week program, but
unfortunately we are unable to accommodate the requirements for the
program at this time.
A Silver course is offered at West Vancouver Yacht Club and Hollyburn Sailing Club; Bowen
children are welcome at both programs. If there is sufficient interest,
BIYC will offer a course for Bronze students who wish to participate in
the Commodore’s Cup race at the end of August. Parent participation is
mandatory.
• All participants must be competent swimmers.
• Students must provide their own M.O.T. certified lifejacket, and must bring appropriate clothing - swimsuit, hat, sandals, towel and sunscreen as well as rain gear. Bring lunch and lots to drink.
• Parents, please ensure your child is up to the challenge by discussing this activity beforehand. There are no refunds once the session has commenced.
